I experienced this exact thing a ton when my kids were little. Old women stopping, staring, cooing, making faces, showering you with adulation, pure joy. Young women acting like you just ripped a fart in the elevator. Freaky.
Fear is part of it, for sure. What you are is a direct result of the things you've done, and having kids (and Even getting married) is a commitment that shapes and changes you.
But selfishness is baked in here too. These people will fret about the climate crisis and overpopulation while doing nothing but just consuming, consuming, consuming. Living for nothing but their own immediate desire
Where I live it is very common to see affluent, middle aged childless women pushing a stroller with a tiny dog in it. Obviously displacement or twisting of maternal instinct. In a way it's incredibly creepy.
